This Internet Radio Program is dedicated to Professor Asrat Woldeyes, a distinguished surgeon, former Professor and Dean of the Medical Faculty at Addis Ababa University.  Professor Asrat was the President of the All Amhara People Organization (AAPO).  Because of his unwavering stand for the oppressed people, democracy, justice and the unity of Ethiopia, he was sentenced to a five-and-a-half year prison term in July 1994.  He was falsely accused of inciting violence for political ends although there is well-documented evidence that demonstrates Professor Asrat's commitment to non-violent activities.

Because of the wide support of the Ethiopian people, in and outside the country, and the international pressure put on the EPRDF-led government to free Professor Asrat, he was released from prison in December 1998.  His health significantly worsened during his detention because of lack of medical care.   He suffered from a heart condition and diabetes that were worsened by delays in providing him with adequate medical assistance. Professor Asrat Woldeyes died on May 14, 1999.

 

The purpose of this Internet Radio Program is, therefore, to keep the exemplary contributions and spirit of Professor Asrat Woldeyes alive for posterity so that the current and succeeding Ethiopian generations take up the banner and torch of this patriotic Ethiopian and continue the struggle for the supremacy of the rule of law, democracy, justice, and Ethiopian Unity now and for ever.
